Read AI is the best AI meeting notetaker for ChatGPT if you want ChatGPT to do more than read your transcripts. Its ChatGPT plugin exposes 14 tools: ChatGPT can list and read your meetings, search them by what was said, send a Read AI notetaker to a Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams call, share a report, and organize meetings into folders. The same plugin works in Codex and in ChatGPT workspace agents, and it is available on every Read AI plan, including Free.
The rest of the field connects ChatGPT to your meeting data mostly on a read basis. Otter, Granola, and Fathom let ChatGPT search and read transcripts and summaries. Fireflies adds housekeeping actions on meeting records, and Fellow adds write access to agendas. None of them can start a recording. This comparison covers what each plugin lets ChatGPT do, as of October 2026.
What should a meeting notetaker plugin for ChatGPT be able to do?
A ChatGPT plugin is an installable connector, built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), that gives ChatGPT permission-based access to a tool’s data and actions. OpenAI moved its app directory to the plugin directory in July 2026, so some vendors still call these apps or MCP connectors. For a meeting notetaker, the plugin decides what ChatGPT can do with your meetings. Six things separate the options:
- Install from the directory. The notetaker should be listed in ChatGPT’s plugin directory, so you install and sign in instead of enabling developer mode and pasting an MCP server URL.
- Read everything you can already see. Transcripts, summaries, action items, key questions, and participants, limited to the meetings your own account can open.
- Act, not just read. The useful work happens after the question: sending a notetaker to the next call, sharing a report with a teammate, filing meetings into a folder. Most plugins stop at reading, or at housekeeping on the record.
- Find meetings by what was said. Browsing by date works when you know which meeting you want. Searching by topic, decision, person, or phrase works when you don’t.
- Work on the plan you have. Some plugins gate transcripts or history behind paid tiers.
- Carry your permissions and compliance with it. The plugin should follow the notetaker’s existing access controls and sit on SOC 2, HIPAA, and GDPR commitments you have already reviewed.
How do the ChatGPT plugins compare?
All six notetakers below are listed in ChatGPT’s plugin directory. The difference is what ChatGPT can do once connected.
Competitor rows reflect each vendor’s plugin listing and documentation as summarized in Fellow’s September 2026 comparison; the Read AI row reflects Read AI’s MCP server guide. Check the current listing before you buy.
Why Read AI is the best meeting notetaker for ChatGPT
Read AI is an AI meeting notetaker for Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, used by more than 5 million people a month. Its ChatGPT plugin is the only one in this comparison that lets ChatGPT start a recording, and the only one that carries the same tools into Codex and ChatGPT workspace agents.
- Send a notetaker from inside ChatGPT. Say “Send Read AI to this Zoom link” and a Read AI meeting agent joins the call as a participant, subject to the meeting’s admission and recording controls. No other plugin here can do this.
- Search by what was said. A search agent on Read AI’s side reads the likely transcripts and returns the best matches, each with a one-line reason and a supporting excerpt. Ask “when did we agree to move the launch?” instead of scrolling by date.
- Organize and share without leaving ChatGPT. Create private or shared folders, add a whole recurring series at once, share a folder or a single report by email.
- Read everything your account can see. Summaries, chapter summaries, action items, key questions, topics, full transcripts with speakers, engagement metrics, and a link to the recording.
- Works in Codex and workspace agents. Connect once in ChatGPT and the same tools are available to Codex and to agents your workspace runs, so an agent can pull meeting context or dispatch a notetaker as part of a larger task.
- Available on every plan. The plugin works on Free, Pro, and Enterprise Read AI accounts. Free includes 5 meeting transcripts a month and 20+ languages.
- Your permissions carry over. ChatGPT only sees meetings you can open in Read AI, and can only share what you are allowed to share. Workspace admins control the Downloads setting that enables access.
- Built on consent. Read AI announces itself when it joins, posts opt-out instructions in the meeting chat, and is SOC 2 and HIPAA compliant with GDPR alignment.
- One server, every assistant. The same MCP server powers the ChatGPT plugin, the Claude connector, Microsoft Copilot Studio, and Gamma, so a team split across assistants shares one meeting memory.
The alternatives, and where each one stops
Every notetaker below is listed in ChatGPT’s plugin directory. Each is a reasonable choice if you already use it and mainly need ChatGPT to read your meetings.
- Fellow: best for agenda-driven teams. Fellow’s plugin reads transcripts and action items and can add talking points, notes, and follow-ups to meeting agendas. It cannot send a notetaker to a call, and the free plan is capped at 5 AI notes and 5 recordings for the life of the account.
- Fireflies: best for high-volume transcript search. The plugin summarizes transcripts, surfaces action items, and searches history, and it can tidy records: move transcripts between channels, change privacy, rename meetings, create soundbites. Default capture is a visible bot; HIPAA is an Enterprise-plan feature, and Fireflies notes that its retention policy does not extend to data once ChatGPT holds it.
- Otter.ai: best for live transcription. Otter’s plugin searches by keyword, date, attendee, folder, or channel and returns speaker-attributed transcripts. It is read-only, and plugin access on the free plan is not confirmed.
- Fathom: best free plan for individuals. Fathom’s plugin pulls summaries, action items, and transcripts into ChatGPT, included on an unlimited free tier. Write actions are not documented, and bot-free capture is limited to Google Meet.
- Granola: best for invisible, local capture. Granola records from your Mac or PC without joining the call, and its plugin brings those notes into ChatGPT. On the free plan, ChatGPT reaches only your own notes from the last 30 days; full history, folders, and transcripts require Business.
For the five-tool field without Read AI, see Fellow’s ChatGPT plugin comparison. Its own conclusion is that the biggest difference between plugins is whether ChatGPT can only read your meetings or can also act on them.
How do I connect Read AI to ChatGPT?
- Sign in to ChatGPT.
- Open Plugins and search for Read AI, or open the Read AI listing. If your account shows Apps instead of Plugins, search for Read AI there.
- Select the Read AI listing, then Install plugin.
- Continue to Read AI when prompted.
- Sign in to your Read AI account, review the permissions, and select Allow Access.
- Return to ChatGPT and test the connection.
Connecting once covers ChatGPT, Codex, and ChatGPT workspace agents. Your ChatGPT account or workspace must allow Plugins. If you belong to a Read AI workspace, your admin must enable Downloads under Workspace Settings → Reports & Sharing. Full steps are in the Read AI guide to connecting ChatGPT and Codex.
Try: “Use Read AI to catch me up on my last three project meetings, then send Read AI to tomorrow’s follow-up call.”
Frequently asked questions
Which AI meeting notetaker has a write-capable ChatGPT plugin?
Three do, to different degrees. Read AI’s plugin can send a notetaker to a live Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams call, share meeting reports, and create and share folders. Fellow’s plugin can add talking points, notes, and follow-ups to meeting agendas. Fireflies’ plugin can move transcripts, change privacy, rename meetings, and create soundbites. Otter and Granola are read-only, and Fathom’s write actions are not documented.
Can ChatGPT send a notetaker to a meeting?
Yes, with Read AI installed. Give ChatGPT the meeting link and ask it to send Read AI. The Read AI agent joins as a participant, subject to the meeting’s admission and recording controls. ChatGPT itself does not join the call.
Is it a ChatGPT plugin or a ChatGPT app?
Both names refer to the same thing. OpenAI moved its app directory to the plugin directory in July 2026, and some accounts still show Apps during the rollout. Read AI is listed in both views.
Does the Read AI plugin work in Codex?
Yes. One connection to your ChatGPT account covers ChatGPT, Codex, and agents your ChatGPT workspace runs.
Does Read AI’s ChatGPT plugin work on a free plan?
On Read AI’s side, yes: MCP access is available on every plan, including Free. On ChatGPT’s side, OpenAI notes that plugin availability depends on your plan and workspace settings, and some workspaces require an admin to enable plugins first.
Can I install more than one notetaker plugin?
Yes. ChatGPT allows multiple plugins and uses whichever is relevant to the question. Most teams standardize on one so that search covers every meeting.
